This component replaces a classic Panel component

This component is being integrated into Panel. Starting with Panel 1.10 it is available as pn.ui.DatetimePicker, documented in the Panel reference, and supersedes the classic pn.widgets.DatetimePicker. On Panel 1.10 and later, prefer the panel.ui namespace.

import datetime as dt

import panel as pn
import panel_material_ui as pmui

pn.extension()

The DatetimePicker widget allows selecting selecting a datetime value using a text box and the browser’s datetime-picking utility.

Discover more on using widgets to add interactivity to your applications in the how-to guides on interactivity. Alternatively, learn how to set up callbacks and (JS-)links between parameters or how to use them as part of declarative UIs with Param.

Parameters:#

For details on other options for customizing the component see the customization guides.

Core#

  • clearable (boolean, default=False): If true, allows the date to be cleared.

  • disabled (boolean, default=False): Whether the widget is editable

  • format (str):The format of the datetime displayed in the input (by default depends on military_time).

  • military_time (boolean): Enable 24 hours time in the widget, default is True

  • start (datetime.datetime | datetime.date | str): Inclusive lower bound of the allowed date selection as a datetime or str in ISO format.

  • value (datetime.datetime | datetime.date | str): The selected value as a datetime or str in ISO format. Always returns a datetime object.

Display#

  • error_state (boolean): Whether to display in error state.

  • helper_text (str): Helper text displayed below the input field.

  • label (str): The title of the widget

  • visible (boolean): Whether the widget is visible

Styling#

  • color (str): Choose from “default” (default), “primary”, “secondary”, “error”, “info”, “success”, “warning”, “light”, “dark”, or “danger”.

  • size (str, default=”medium”): Controls the visual size/density of the date and time picker input field. One of “small”, “medium”, or “large”.

  • sx (dict): Component-level styling options.

  • theme_config (dict): Theming options.

  • variant (str): Choose from “filled”, “outlined” (default), or “standard”.

Aliases#

For compatibility with Panel certain parameters are allowed as aliases:

  • button_style: Alias for variant

  • button_type: Alias for color

  • name: Alias for label

Basic Usage#

DatetimePicker allows selecting a date and time. The datetime can be provided as a datetime object or as an ISO string and supports optional start and end bounds:

datetime_picker = pmui.DatetimePicker(
    label='Datetime Picker', value=dt.datetime(2021, 3, 2, 12, 10), start='2021-03-01 00:00', end='2021-03-31 00:00'
)

datetime_picker

To ensure it is visible in a notebook we have placed it in a Column with a fixed height.

DatetimePicker.value always returns a datetime type that can be read out or set like other widgets:

datetime_picker.value
datetime.datetime(2021, 3, 2, 12, 10)

Time format#

The time format is controlled by the format and military_time options. The former controls how the time is displayed once selected while the latter controls whether the picker displays a 12 hour or 24 hour clock:

datetime_12h = pmui.DatetimePicker(
    label='Datetime Picker', military_time=False, value=dt.datetime(2021, 3, 2, 12, 10)
)

datetime_24h = pmui.DatetimePicker(
    label='Datetime Picker', military_time=False, value=dt.datetime(2021, 3, 2, 12, 10), format='YY-MM-DD hh:mm a'
)

datetime_seconds = pmui.DatetimePicker(
    label='Datetime Picker', enable_seconds=True, value=dt.datetime(2021, 3, 2, 12, 10, 32)
)

pmui.Row(datetime_picker, datetime_24h, datetime_seconds)

Limiting to a calendar range#

The range of selectable dates can be limited by setting start and/or end:

dt_picker = pmui.DatetimePicker(
    label='Date Time Picker',
    start=dt.datetime(2024, 4, 1, 0, 0),
    end=dt.datetime(2024, 4, 7, 0, 0),
    value=dt.datetime(2024, 4, 1, 11, 37)
)

dt_picker

Disable Past or Future#

The disable_past and disable_future options make it easy to limit the selectable dates:

disable_past = pmui.DatetimePicker(
    disable_past=True,
    label='Date Time Picker (disable_past)',
)

disable_future = pmui.DatetimePicker(
    disable_future=True,
    label='Date Time Picker (disable_future)',
)

pmui.Row(disable_past, disable_future)

Enabled Dates#

The enabled_dates option allows limiting the dates that can be selected to a specific subset:

date_picker = pmui.DatetimePicker(
    label='Date Time Picker (enabled_dates)',
    enabled_dates=[dt.datetime(2024, 4, i, 12, 37) for i in range(1, 7)],
    value=dt.datetime(2024, 4, 1, 11, 37)
)

date_picker

Helper Text#

The helper_text parameter displays additional guidance text below the input field:

pmui.DatetimePicker(label='Event', helper_text='Select date and time')

Disabled Dates#

The disabled_dates option allows excluding specific dates:

date_picker = pmui.DatetimePicker(
    label='Date Time Picker (disabled_dates)',
    disabled_dates=[dt.datetime(2024, 4, i, 12, 37) for i in range(2, 7)],
    value=dt.datetime(2024, 4, 1, 11, 37)
)

date_picker

Size Options#

The size parameter allows you to control the visual size and density of the DatetimePicker input field. Choose from “small”, “medium” (default), or “large”:

pmui.Row(
    *[pmui.DatetimePicker(label=size, value=dt.datetime(2024, 4, 14, 10, 30), size=size) for size in pmui.DatetimePicker.param.size.objects]
)

Icon Labels#

Material icon tokens like :material/zoom_out_map: render as icons in labels and option labels.

icon_datetime_picker = pmui.DatetimePicker(
    label=":material/event: Schedule",
    value=dt.datetime(2021, 3, 2, 12, 10),
)

icon_datetime_picker

Controls#

The DatetimePicker widget exposes a number of options which can be changed from both Python and Javascript. Try out the effect of these parameters interactively:

pmui.Row(datetime_picker.api(jslink=True), datetime_picker)
